Power of the Purse is a month-long community-building fundraising and awareness event for all YWCA Greater Lafayette programs:
- Racial & Social Justice
- Domestic Violence Intervention & Prevention Program including a domestic violence survivor shelter and advocacy program suite
- Women’s Wellness including Women’s Cancer Program, IN-WISEWOMAN and Y-Dance connecting women and girls with services and opportunities to lead healthier lives
- Empowerment Services including STRIVE workforce development for all people through any stage of employment and Dress for Success Greater Lafayette which empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to thrive in work and in life
This is an opportunity for everyone in our community and anyone who supports YWCA’s mission of empowering women and eliminating racism to show their support through advocacy and action. Our 45+ team of directors, managers, advocates and volunteers shows up 365 days each year to ensure that all operations continue. Your objective is to galvanize the community to bring awareness to our mission and advocate for the 10K+ clients we serve across all programming annually so YWCA Greater Lafayette can continue the work that needs to be done.
- Team Persimmon Supports the overall YWCA Greater Lafayette mission including, but not limited to, Empowerment Services and Racial & Social Justice Initiatives.
- Team Pink Supports Women’s Wellness Program, which provides preventative healthcare services, cancer screenings and diagnostic procedures to underinsured and uninsured women.
- Team Purple Supports Domestic Violence Intervention &Prevention Program, which operates a 30-bed emergency shelter, a 24/7 crisis hotline, support groups, legal advocacy and more.

Power of the Purse is an online, community-led fundraising initiative that takes place throughout the entire month of October and directly benefits YWCA Greater Lafayette programs. Pursesetters lead the campaign by having conversations with friends, family members, co-workers and other empowered members of our community about the life-changing work being done at YWCA Greater Lafayette provided to women and families in our community. What began as a fundraising challenge initiative through the Allstate Foundation has become an annual appeal to keep our community connected to unduplicated services that sustain a truly Greater Lafayette.
Though we continued to face challenges last year, 48 Pursesetters across three teams rallied to raise more than $90,000 in support of our Domestic Violence Intervention & Prevention Program, Women’s Wellness Program, and YWCA Greater Lafayette mission. These funds ensured that our services team and mission remained unstoppable. Where there is a will, there is a YWCA!
A Pursesetter is a member of our community who is passionate about YWCA Greater Lafayette’s mission of empowering women and eliminating racism. There are three Pursesetter “teams” to choose from. Each team will focus on a particular aspect of YWCA’s work in our community:
- Team Persimmon Supports the overall YWCA Greater Lafayette mission including, but not limited to, Empowerment Services and Racial & Social Justice Initiatives.

As a Pursesetter, your goal is to raise at least $1,000 from during October through your Challenge Fundraising Page. You may also collect cash or check donations and deliver them to YWCA to be added to your challenge total.
You can raise funds through an online Power of the Purse donation page (provided by YWCA), from an event that you host, a percentage of sales or profits from a business, personal donation – it’s up to you!

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect every aspect of our work. Lingering health concerns, an increase in domestic violence, rising costs, and an unstable employment landscape means that our work continues to increase. YWCA Greater Lafayette’s team tirelessly navigates these waters and because of you, we remain unstoppable in our mission to empower women and eliminate racism.

Pursesetters and participants are a focal point of campaign messaging, providing a unique opportunity for businesses and community members to showcase community goodwill and increase exposure to a wide net of potential customers.
