SAR21: Statement from Renee Thomas, Black Cultural Center of Purdue University
I relocated to the Greater Lafayette community over 30 years ago to work for the Purdue University Black Cultural Center. When I first moved to this beautiful community, it immediately became apparent there is something special about being a Boilermaker and member of the Greater Lafayette community. Our community is full of energy and excitement. For over a half century, the Black Cultural Center has been a beacon for the community. The BCC is a vibrant element of Greater Lafayette and is committed to presenting the rich heritage of the African American experience through the arts, history and cultural understanding. The BCC enriches Greater Lafayette through a diverse array of culturally relevant programs that build community. We sponsor a cascade of compelling speakers, art exhibitions and performances, host facility tours and sponsor six student performing arts ensembles. The ensembles are trained in dance, drama, choral music, creative writing and scholarly research. The BCC ensembles present impactful performances educating audiences on African American culture and history.I believe diversity enriches our lives. We learn from experiences, beliefs and perceptions that are different from our own. As we celebrate Stand Against Racism week, I invite you to extend the celebration beyond April 25 and visit the BCC. Make a commitment to attend our vast array of programs featuring guest speakers and performers.During this period of racial unrest and the COVID-19 crisis, it is critically important we engage in cultural education programs and outreach activities to learn, change and grow.
