Dear YWCA Greater Lafayette Family,In the 92-year history of YWCA Greater Lafayette, the need to fulfill our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women has never been greater. People of color across our country and right here in Greater Lafayette, have been barraged with messages of hate, inequity, lack of opportunity, disparities in healthcare and the disproportionate burden of the COVID-19 crisis. The event, primarily promoted through a grassroots digital campaign, will drive awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism while building community among those who work for racial justice.This year’s theme, From Declarations to Change: Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis, acknowledges the long-standing impact of structural racism on the health and safety of people of color.Racism affects access to quality housing, education, food, transportation, political power and other social determinants of health. Understanding and addressing systemic racism from this public health perspective is crucial to eliminating racial and ethnic inequities and improving opportunity and well-being across Greater Lafayette.Stand Against Racism will provide an opportunity for Greater Lafayette citizens to find a local issue that inspires them to take a Stand Against Racism. They will unite their voices in educating, advocating and promoting racial justice through workplace commitment posters and online opportunities to take the pledge against racism. Individuals are encouraged to engage in conversations, both online and in their social circles, and share the tangible ways they will personally Stand against Racism.Today, we also announce the search for our first Senior Director for Racial Justice and Social Justice. For the past three years, YWCA Greater Lafayette has renewed its commitment to, first and foremost, honor our principal mission of eliminating racism. The dynamic leader we seek will be charged with the development of internal and external operations, thought leadership and educational offerings of YWCA’s Racial and Social Justice organizational imperative.Our hope is that Stand Against Racism will further contribute to a truly equitable Greater Lafayette where all people can thrive.
